Wild Turkeys

I forgot about the Wild Turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) I saw in North Dakota a couple weeks ago.  I didn't get stopped and camera grabbed soon enough to get a photo of a male all puffed out in the ole Thanksgiving Turkey display.  Too bad, he was gorgeous.

I heard him gobble, though.

A cool fact from AllAboutBirds:

A native of North America, the turkey is one of only two domesticated birds originating in the New World. The Muscovy Duck is the other.

I'm hungry (just kidding....but who doesn't love a good roast turkey dinner?)

Go here to listen to gobbles:

  1. They had largely disappeared from Bluff Country 50 years ago. Now restored they are everywhere in our largely intact wood. Its the pheasants who have disappeared now along with all th sloughs, wetlands and fence rows. Sad but true.....

    1. Sad is right. We have a few turkeys around here - along the river. There seems to be a lot of slough draining & clearing off of shelter belts around here as well. Fortunately, not all the land owners are so stupid.
